Myanmar Military Airstrike Kills 11 Civilians, Including Children, in Kachin State

Myanmar’s military carried out two airstrikes on the town of Sadone in Kachin State on September 29th, killing at least 11 civilians, including two five-year-old children, according to the Kachin Independence Army (KIA).

The attacks struck a local market near a school in the afternoon and then again in the evening. A KIA information officer, Colonel Naw Bu, stated that the second airstrike hit during ongoing rescue operations.

“This was not a battle zone,” said Naw Bu. “Bombing schools and civilian areas, then striking again, means they targeted rescue teams. This is inhumane.”

Initial reports indicate eight civilians, including the two children, were killed instantly. Three more later died from their injuries. Six other people, including two children, are being treated for severe wounds.

Sadone, which is located near the China border, has been under KIA control since June. The colonel accused the junta of committing a war crime, noting there was no active fighting in the town at the time, though clashes continue in other parts of the region.

The military junta has not commented on the incident.
