At the opening of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly, Myanmar’s UN Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun urged the international community to take action against the country’s military junta, calling it the root cause of the ongoing Rohingya crisis.
Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that the 2021 coup and the junta’s continued atrocities have created a dire human rights situation, making safe and voluntary repatriation for the Rohingya impossible. He reported that indiscriminate attacks, forced conscription, and widespread violence continue across Myanmar, including in Rakhine State.
The National Unity Government has adopted a policy to resolve the Rohingya crisis as part of its broader goals. However, the ambassador stressed that ending military rule is essential to creating conditions for return. He called on neighboring countries, regional organizations, and the international community to withhold all political, military, and financial support from the junta and to reject its planned elections.
The conference was urged to send a strong message of solidarity and to take decisive action, ensuring the international community does not fail the people of Myanmar. A lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis, he concluded, depends on establishing a genuine federal democracy.
