Myanmar’s Acting President, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has returned from official visits to Russia and Kazakhstan, with a stop in Kunming, China, on the way home. The trip focused on strengthening international partnerships and exploring new avenues for cooperation, particularly in energy and technology.
In Russia, the Senior General attended the World Atomic Week Forum, where he met with President Vladimir Putin and addressed the international gathering. He outlined Myanmar’s interest in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, such as securing a stable electricity supply and advancing research in medicine and agriculture. Agreements were signed with ROSATOM, Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, to further this cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their countries’ strategic partnership and discussed expanding collaboration in space technology and other beneficial technological exchanges.
The visit to Kazakhstan marked the first time a Myanmar leader has traveled to the nation. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his satisfaction with the historic visit and highlighted potential areas for collaboration. These include opportunities in technology, particularly IT, and joint investment and development projects. Kazakhstan’s strategic location as a central hub between Asia and Europe was also discussed, with an emphasis on its role in major transportation networks.
On the return journey, the delegation stopped in Kunming, China, for a meeting with officials from Yunnan Province and the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Southeast Asian Affairs. Discussions centered on four key areas: enhancing the close, friendly relations between the two neighbors; ensuring peace and stability along their shared border; promoting trade and economic cooperation; and accelerating the implementation of projects under the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. China also reaffirmed its continued support for Myanmar’s peace process.
Officials stated that these visits open new opportunities for Myanmar’s development. They emphasized the importance of national unity and strategic planning to capitalize on these international partnerships for the country’s socioeconomic progress.
