Mandalay University celebrated its 100th anniversary with a grand ceremony yesterday, marking a century of academic excellence. The event was inaugurated by Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.
In his address, the Senior General highlighted the university’s prestigious history as a symbol of Mandalay, noting its significant contributions to the nation. Over the past 100 years, Mandalay University has produced nearly 100,000 graduates, including thousands of doctorate, master’s, and bachelor’s degree holders.
He emphasized that a university’s role extends beyond teaching arts, sciences, and modern subjects; it must also be a hub for pioneering, technology-based research, which he described as its “lifeblood.” The State is focusing on enhancing agriculture, livestock, and industrial sectors to improve socioeconomic conditions, and universities are key to producing the qualified professionals needed for this development.
The Senior General also stressed the importance of a peaceful and stable nation for education to thrive. He called for efforts to produce internationally competitive human resources, including intellectuals, experts, and postgraduates, to drive the nation’s progress.
The celebration included the unveiling of a commemorative stone plaque, cultural performances by students, and an exhibition showcasing the university’s history and the progress of renovations to its main building, which was damaged in an earthquake. Further events to honor veteran teachers and showcase research are planned for the centennial.
