China Leads Myanmar Rice Imports in First Five Months of FY2025–26

China has become the leading importer of Myanmar’s rice during the first five months of the 2025–26 financial year, purchasing nearly half a million tonnes of rice and broken rice, according to data from the Myanmar Rice Federation.

From April 1 to August 31, China imported 498,926 tonnes—far surpassing other major buyers. Indonesia came in second with over 120,000 tonnes, followed by the Philippines with 106,000 tonnes. Other significant importers included Belgium, Spain, and Madagascar.

Overall, Myanmar exported more than one million tonnes of rice and broken rice during this period, generating $355 million in revenue. May saw the highest export volume at over 529,000 tonnes, valued at $91 million.

The vast majority of exports were shipped by sea, with only limited quantities moving across land borders, likely due to ongoing conflict and the closure of several trade gates.

Myanmar has set an export target of three million tonnes for the current financial year. Last year, the country exported 2.48 million tonnes, earning $1.13 billion.

Efforts are underway to help reach this year’s goal, with the Ministry of Commerce working alongside trade associations to coordinate monthly targets and facilitate overseas sales.

Rice exports remain a critical source of foreign exchange for Myanmar amid ongoing economic challenges. China’s role as the top market highlights the continued importance of agricultural trade between the two countries.
