Deadly Landslides and Floods Claim 63 Lives Across Nepal and India

Heavy rains have triggered devastating landslides and floods across Nepal and India, resulting in the deaths of at least 63 people. Rescue teams are working urgently to reach remote communities isolated by the destruction.

In Nepal, days of torrential downpours have killed at least 43 people, with five others reported missing. The worst-hit area was the eastern district of Illam, where 37 people lost their lives in a series of landslides. District officials report that blocked roads are making rescue efforts difficult, with many teams forced to proceed on foot.

The capital city of Kathmandu has also been affected, with swollen rivers flooding nearby settlements. Security personnel have been deployed with helicopters and motorboats to assist in the rescue operations.

The severe weather has stranded hundreds of travelers, many of whom were returning home after celebrating the Hindu festival of Dashain. In response, the Nepalese government has declared two public holidays and advised people to avoid travel. Prime Minister Sushila Kanki assured the public that government agencies are “fully prepared for rescue and relief.”

Across the border in India’s Darjeeling district, at least 20 people were killed by flash floods and landslides following heavy overnight rains. The tea-growing hill region saw homes and critical infrastructure destroyed. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated he is “pained by the loss of lives” and that the situation is being closely monitored.

Monsoon rains bring widespread destruction to South Asia annually, but experts warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of these disasters, leading to a heightened risk of floods and landslides during the season.
