Myanmar’s military government has announced it will provide a monthly bonus of 30,000 kyats to state employees who have not joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). The allowance, which also applies to military personnel and retired staff under its control, begins this month.
Daily wage workers in government departments will receive an additional 1,000 kyats per day. However, the bonus does not extend to employees on official study leave abroad or retirees living overseas.
This marks the third allowance increase for active staff and the second for retirees since the 2021 coup. The move is described as an effort to support employees during a time of economic instability, though many remain skeptical due to soaring inflation.
One government worker in Naypyitaw expressed doubt, saying, “How can it cover the costs? It can’t. I’m not excited.”
Myanmar’s economy has declined steadily since the coup, with rising prices putting severe strain on households. A recent United Nations report indicated that around 2.7 million people in Yangon are now living in poverty, with conditions continuing to worsen.
