New Prosthetic Center Opens in Yangon to Provide Free Limbs

A new prosthetic fitting center has opened in Yangon, offering free limbs to more than 600 people over the next six weeks. The center, the fourth of its kind, was inaugurated on October 2nd to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The opening ceremony was held at the Pitaka Nikel Monastery and organized by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) and the U Nu + Daw Mya Yi Foundation (UNDMYF). The event was attended by over 100 guests, including the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, along with officials from the Myanmar-India Friendship Association and the country’s Social Welfare Department.

Following prayers, speeches were delivered by Ambassador Thakur, BMVSS Chair Satish C. Mehta, and UNDMYF founder Daw Than Than Nu. The ceremony included a demonstration where prosthetic limbs were fitted for six individuals, and guests were given a tour of the new workshop to meet the team of specialists.

Funded by India’s Ministry of External Affairs under its ‘India for Humanity’ initiative, the center is operated by BMVSS. The organization has provided prosthetics to millions globally since 1975. This project marks a significant humanitarian effort within the broader development cooperation between Myanmar and India. Together, BMVSS and UNDMYF have now opened four centers, providing assistance to nearly 1,500 people across the country.
