Rescue teams and local volunteers are continuing their search for two women who went missing after a sudden flash flood swept through the popular “8 Floor” waterfall near Ohn Chaw village in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Region. The incident occurred on the afternoon of September 29th.
The group, which included foreign teachers from a private school, was caught by surprise when a powerful torrent of water rushed down the mountain stream. Five people were carried away by the rapid currents.
Tragically, two individuals, including one foreign national, have been confirmed dead. A 43-year-old Russian man was rescued and is being treated for a leg injury at Pyin Oo Lwin People’s Hospital. The two women have not yet been located.
Communication challenges in the remote area have made it difficult to get real-time updates from the search teams on the ground. A representative from the Myanmar Social Rescue Team (Mandalay Region) stated, “We are continuing to search for the two. The phone line is not connecting there, so we haven’t been able to communicate yet.”
The waterfall, known for its natural beauty and multiple tiers, has become an increasingly popular destination for both locals and tourists. In the wake of this incident, many are using social media to warn visitors about the dangers of visiting waterfalls and streams during Myanmar’s rainy season, when sudden flash floods can occur without warning.
