Myanmar Conflict: NUG Declares Junta a Terrorist Group, Battles and Diplomacy Continue

The National Unity Government (NUG) has officially declared the country’s military junta, also referred to as the State Security and Peace Commission, a terrorist organization. The announcement was part of a series of updates on the ongoing conflict from October 2nd.

A spokesperson for the NUG’s Prime Minister Office accused the junta of using conscripted soldiers as human shields in frontline battles and reported that some prisoners of war appeared to be under the influence of drugs. The spokesperson also called for continued international support for Myanmar’s Ambassador to the UN, U Kyaw Moe Tun, and urged pressure on the junta over the arbitrary detention of labor activists.

On the ground, revolutionary activities continued. In Mandalay Region, the Thabaitgyin Township People’s Defence Force was reported to be conducting public health activities, while another PDF group provided aid to displaced people. In Sagaing Region, public movements were held with signs rejecting the junta’s planned election, stating “Election is not Democracy.”

Military engagements were reported in several regions. The Union Liberation Front stated it captured junta soldiers who fled a battle in Kani Township, Sagaing Region. In Mandalay Region, a junta airstrike on Ye Htwet Gyi Village injured one civilian. Meanwhile, in Yangon, a grenade attack targeted a local junta administration office.

From ethnic armed organizations, the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force emphasized the need for collective budgeting among revolutionary forces. The Arakan Army reported finding bodies of Arakan people it says were killed by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) near the Bangladesh border. In a separate incident, four junta conscripts defected to the Karen National Liberation Army in Tanintharyi Region.

On the diplomatic front, the acting leader of Bangladesh called for international pressure on both the junta and the Arakan Army to stop violence against Rohingya people and to assist with repatriation.

The military junta’s activities were also noted. State media announced increased financial support for non-Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) staff and reported that voter lists for its planned election have been posted. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing reportedly visited Russia for a Nuclear Forum, where he pledged to transfer state duties after the election. The regime also reported arresting 18 more foreigners in connection with online scam operations in the Myawaddy area.

A weather warning was also issued by the junta’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, forecasting that a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal could develop into a storm, bringing widespread rain across Myanmar in the coming days.
