China has emerged as the top importer of Myanmar’s rice over the past five months of the current financial year, which began on 1 April 2025. According to data from the Myanmar Rice Federation, China purchased 498,926 tonnes of rice and broken rice.
Other leading importers include Indonesia, which bought over 120,161 tonnes, and the Philippines, with over 105,732 tonnes. They were followed by Belgium, Spain, Madagascar, Poland, Senegal, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria, the Netherlands, and Italy.
Overall, Myanmar’s rice and broken rice exports have surpassed one million tonnes this financial year, generating $355 million in revenue.
Monthly export figures show consistent overseas sales, with over 142,700 tonnes shipped in April, 529,500 tonnes in May, 212,400 tonnes in June, 230,671 tonnes in July, and 192,984 tonnes in August. The vast majority of these exports were conducted by sea, with only minor volumes going to neighboring countries via land borders.
The Myanmar Rice Federation has set an ambitious target of exporting three million tonnes of rice before the end of the current financial year. This follows a successful previous year, where the country earned over $1.129 billion from exporting 2.48 million tonnes of rice and broken rice.
To help achieve these goals, the Ministry of Commerce is collaborating with various trade associations to facilitate exports and meet monthly targets.
