Myanmar Junta Clashes Intensify as Fighting Rages in Kyaukme

Heavy fighting has intensified in the northern Shan State town of Kyaukme, with key government buildings set ablaze amid renewed clashes between resistance forces and Myanmar’s military junta.

Residents reported sustained gunfire, explosions, and drone strikes throughout the day on September 30th. By evening, several major buildings—including the local police station, forest department office, and a political party office—were seen engulfed in flames.

The town has been unstable, with many shops closed and civilians sheltering at home to avoid the crossfire. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which has controlled Kyaukme since early July, continues to maintain a presence in the area despite a renewed military offensive.

Junta forces began their latest push on September 27th and have advanced to within four miles of the town. The conflict has already displaced an estimated 10,000 people, with many others remaining trapped in the active conflict zone.

Kyaukme was initially captured by anti-junta forces during Operation 1027 (Part 2) earlier this year but now appears at risk of being retaken by the military.
