Myanmar’s Military Junta Branded Terrorist Organization by NUG

The National Unity Government (NUG) has formally designated Myanmar’s ruling military council and its members as terrorist organizations.

In a statement issued on September 30, the NUG declared the National Security and Tranquility Commission—a rebranded version of the military junta established in July—to be a terrorist entity. The declaration also specifically names Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and all other members of the commission as terrorists.

The NUG’s order cited the group’s violent actions against civilians and its origin as a continuation of the State Administration Council, which had previously been labeled a terrorist organization. The military first seized power in a February 2021 coup, detaining elected leaders including Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.

This announcement reinforces the NUG’s longstanding position that the military leadership is an illegitimate and violent regime acting against the will of the Myanmar people.
