Yangon’s most famous pagodas, including the iconic Shwedagon Pagoda, were filled with pilgrims yesterday as devotees gathered to celebrate the Full Moon Day of Thadingyut, also known as Abhidhamma Day.
The day was marked by a series of religious ceremonies and acts of devotion. At the Shwedagon Pagoda, events included alms donations, food charity, the observance of precepts, and the recitation of prayers. In the evening, the entire pagoda platform was beautifully illuminated with oil lamps lit by worshippers.
This vibrant scene was repeated at pagodas across the city, such as the Botahtaung Pagoda, Kaba Aye Pagoda, and Sule Pagoda. Pilgrims received the Nine Precepts from venerable monks and dedicated the evening to lighting lamps in honor of the Lord Buddha. Throughout Yangon, devotees were seen offering alms, water, flowers, and lights at Buddha images and stupas, creating a deeply reverent and celebratory atmosphere across the city’s sacred sites.
